Lenovo K800 Intel-powered Android smartphone hands-on

Intel made a big splash at CES 2012 this week when it announced that smartphones using its processors would be released this year. The first smartphone to have Intel inside will be the Lenovo K800, headed to China in the first half of this year.

The K800 runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Lenovo's custom user interface, and has a 4.5-inch, 720p HD display. There is also an 8 megapixel camera with max ISO sensitivity of 3200, and the phone is compatible with HSPA+ networks.

Of course, the most interesting feature of the K800 is its Intel Atom processor that is clocked at 1.6GHz. The processor is a single-core unit, but that didn't seem to hold the K800 back from performing admirably for us. The processor might have indirectly had a negative effect on the body of the K800, though, as the phone is considerably bigger and chunkier than other devices currently on the market.

In using the K800, it seemed pretty much like any other Android smartphone. It worked fluidly enough, with its Lenovo designed user interface, and the display was colorful and sharp. Of course it's impossible to tell at this point how Intel-based smartphones will perform in terms of battery life, something that has traditionally been an issue for any device running Android, but Intel seems to think their devices will be competitive. Lenovo plans to launch the K800 in its home market of China in Q2 of this year. We wouldn't expect to see it in the U.S., but Motorola has also committed to producing Android smartphones with Intel processors, so that might be our best bet for getting Intel inside our phones.
